THE landmark church of St Michael of the Rock, Brentor, will be the setting for a three-day vigil to keep watch during the G7 summit this weekend when world leaders meet in Japan to discuss third world debt.
Local Jubilee 2000 campaigners hope many people will take some time out tomorrow (Friday) and Sunday to meditate or pray for real debt relief.
The church is open with a display during daylight hours and there will be readings at noon and 6pm on Friday and Sunday. The vigil ends will evening service at 6.30pm on Sunday.
While last year's summit in Cologne promised significant cancellation of the debts of the poorest countries, only a handful have yet seen any benefit. Meanwhile 19,000 children a day die for lack of basic health care.
Kit Harbottle, one of the organisers of the vigil, said: 'We hope many people will show their concern by climbing the tor and spending a quiet time in this atmospheric setting — and that those who cannot will remember the summit as they see the church on the horizon.'
