A TOWN well known for its artistic tendencies is looking to expand its number of public art works and wants local residents to put their views forward.

The famous sheep sculpture in Hatherleigh has won praise from near and far, but now the town is looking forward to a new project to tie in with the Hatherleigh Market and Coastal Town initiative.

Sally Vick, of the town?s Salar Gallery, said the aim was to get another piece of artwork sited in the town but it was very early days in finding out what the local opinion was.

?The last piece we had commissioned was the sheep statue leading into the car park and cattle market and we are putting forward a mural as just one idea that might capture people?s imagination,? she said.

?We want people to come along and tell us what they would like to see. We want to retain Hatherleigh?s reputation for art.?

If the mural idea does catch on, a wall to site it will need to be found as there is no publicly owned wall available.

A 5ft by 4ft painting of a ?butcher?s shop? featuring many local figures is currently hanging in the Salar Gallery to fire people?s imagination.
