THE Tamar Evening League cup final took place at Luckett last Thursday between Division 1 champions, Werrington and Division ll runners-up, Tavistock. Werrington, with a strong side including two county players, elected to bat. Ben Smeeth was the star of their innings with a superb 82, but Tavistock kept taking wickets to restrict the run flow. with Lee Baker the star bowler taking 2 for 11 in his 5 overs. Werrington?s total of 153 was a challenging target for the Tavistock players, but a steady start from Chris Cashell and John McGahey kept the scoreboard ticking over before the latter?s unfortunate run-out. Steve Luffman joined Cashell and together they took the score to 93 before Luffman was lbw with just 8 overs left. Robert Jarman then came to the crease and the Tavistock batsmen really went to town. The remaining 63 runs rattled on to the scoreboard with both batsmen scoring freely against the Werrington attack. Victory was achieved with two overs to spare, Cashell finishing with a magnificent 68 not out and Jarman with a rapid 31 giving the underdogs an eight wicket victory to lift the trophy.
