'A DISASTER waiting to happen' is how one of Tavistock's councillors has described the surface water drainage system at the town's Plymouth Road Cemetery.
Cllr Jenny Metcalf was present at a site inspection at the burial ground held recently — she told councillors at last week's properties committee meeting the situation was urgent.
The open pit which deals with the surface water is full and the sump is not working property due to a build up of sediment.
Cllr Metcalf said: 'It's a disaster waiting to happen, it really needs to be looked into.
'It's a double hazard — it's flooding and the damp is going under the superintendent's own home.'
Cllr Ken Sanders, chairman of the committee, said it was not a danger to the public, nor did it affect graves in the cemetery.
'Les Bennett, the works superintendent, is going to get the appropriate expert out as a matter of urgency and see what we need to do to put it right,' he said.
