TAVISTOCK AFC took a pasting against their Premier League opponents Queen's Park Rangers at Langsford Park on Monday but even the heavy rain could not dampen the spirit for players and supporters alike in this pre-season friendly.

The difference in quality of the two sides was emphasized by the 13-0 scoreline in favour to the West London side -reflecting that in the Football League pyramid the Premiership side is on level one compared to level six of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula side for the Lambs.

Around 1,000 spectators enjoyed the clash between Tavistock and the side which last season were Championship champions and newly promoted to the Premier League.

Former Plymouth Argyle manager Neil Warnock, who is now in charge of 'the Hoops,' was happy to bring his team of professionals to test the fitness of his players.

Derek Pethick, treasurer of Tavistock AFC, was delighted that Mr Warnock and his team had accepted the club's invitation as well as the response by home supporters - especially in such wet conditions.

He said: 'Our side did well for the first half to restrict them to just four goals by half time but as time went on QPR got their game together. They were far superior in their fitness and technique but that was only to be expected.

'Neil Warnock said he was delighted for his side to get some match practice and commented on what a fantastic pitch it was to play on.

'There must have been around a 1,000 turned up which, bearing in mind that just before the kick-off it was absolutely pouring down, is superb support.'

n Tavistock AFC continue with their impressive pre-season friendlies when manager Peter Reid brings a strong Plymouth Argyle line-up on Friday, July 29, to Langsford Park, kick-off at 7.30pm.

n TAVISTOCK FC is selling raffle tickets to win an original Pele football shirt, signed by the legend himself.

The raffle is for the Braintrust charity which raises awareness of living with a brain tumour and provides support for sufferers.

The Pele football shirt is framed and includes photos and an authentication certificate. It can currently be viewed at Tavistock Football Club where tickets can be bought or from Allen Lewis on 07749 798808.
