Tavistock v Exeter University
FIRST on was Mike Gray of Tavistock Squash Club against Jim of Exeter University. Jim took the first game 9-1. During the second game Mike put his opponent under greater pressure, the scoreline reflected this with his opponent winning the second 9-5.
Mike put up a valiant effort in the third game to win it and pull back a game for Tavistock. Mike went on to level the match two games all. Jim?s youth won out in the fifth, giving Exeter a two matches to one lead.
Pete Walshe for Tavistock played a useful number 5 for Exeter, Matt. Pete set up Tavistock with an impressive performance, taking the first match 3-0.
Next up was Pete Middleton for Tavistock against William of University. Pete got off to a strong start, taking the first game 9-4. But for the following three games Pete seemed to fall asleep, gifting the match to his opponent 3 games to 1.
The number 2 string Stuart, of Tavistock against a youthful Oliver of Exeter was always going to be a critical battle. Stuart took the first game 9-1. This inspired Olly to come out fighting in the second from which he took a 5-1 lead, Stuart won the second against all odds 10-8. The third game saw Oliver pressurising Stuart on his backhand to pull one game back 9-3. The forth swung back in Stuart?s favour with six decisive backhand drives forcing Olly into mistakes and giving Stuart a 7-2 lead. Stuart went on to win the game 9-2 and therefore level the match 2-2.
It was all down to the number one strings Colin Grice (Tavistock) against Ed. After a nip and tuck battle in the first, Ed came out on top 9-7. In the second Colin performed one of his trademark driving games to win it and level the match 1-1. Colin struggled to get into the third game on which Ed capitalised to take it 9-4.
In the fourth game Colin levelled the match 2-2. This set it up for a fifth set decider for the whole match. Unfortunately for Colin he let Ed off to a commanding start, 6 points to 0. Colin clawed his way back to 6 points all. The match ended with some stylish touch play from Ed, who took the game and the match 9-6.
Exeter were outright winners by three matches to two in a good mannered game.
