A CONFERENCE encouraging the understanding of different cultures and faiths in a time of increased suspicion and fear of different cultures will be held at Tavistock United Reformed Church on Saturday, March 21.

The Rev Roger Cornish said people tended to be suspicious and fearful of those who are different from themselves and to blame 'the other' for the ills of this age.

He said immigrants and people of other faiths were often the ones who were blamed.

Mr Cornish said: 'Since 9/11, the rise of ISIS, the murder of westerners, hostages and the destruction of ancient monuments by groups claiming to act in defence of Allah and his prophet Mohammed, Muslims and the religion of Islam have been regarded with distrust and fear.

'Some people have spoken to me of their feas and if you read the popular press you might believe that mosques up and down the country are encouraging young people to join ISIS.

'This is very far from the truth but is causing people to be fearful. In an age of increasing Islamophobia, we believe it is especially important for Christians to love their Muslim neighbours, a process that begins when we learn who Muslims are and what Muslims actually believe.'

In order to understand each other better, there will be a day conference entitled 'The Jesus Fatwah — love your (Muslim) neighbour'.

Mr Cornish continued: 'We are delighted that assistant Imam Hichem Cheraga from Plymouth's Piety Centre has agreed to come and speak about Islam and Muslims in the UK.

'We have also acquired a DVD of Islamic and Christian scholars to help stimulate debate.'

The day conference, from 10am to 4pm, is open to all.

Drinks, home-made soup and rolls will be served.
