THE man who fought West Devon and Torridge for the United Kingdom Independence Party at the last election is to have another crack at the seat.

Solicitor Matthew Jackson, 37, received unanimous support from UKIP members at a recent meeting of the constituency party.

A Devon man, his family come from the Crediton and Bishopsteignton areas.

A former Conservative Party member, he was educated at Oxford and is to marry in Australia next week. He and his bride will return to London where he works.

Mr Jackson polled 1,841 votes at the last election.

The West Devon and Torridge seat is held by Liberal Democrat John Burnett with a majority of just under 2,000 votes.

l Campaigners from all over the South West descended on Lewdown last weekend to organise opposition to Britain's continued membership of the European Union.

Representatives from the Campaign for an Independent Britain, the Democracy Movement, Freedom Association, Save our Sovereignty, UK Independence Party and Voice for Britain met at Jethro's on Sunday. They were told there were more than 25 similar organisations in the UK and a further 20 across mainland Europe.

The groups say they want to see the UK returned to being a self-governing democracy ruled by directly elected politicians in Westminster instead of unelected European Union commissioners in Brussels.

Joint campaigns across the region over the coming months were discussed.
