TWO awards were presented last week at the tenth anniversary annual meeting of The Dartmoor Society. Members of the society marked the anniversary in a packed village hall at Postbridge on Saturday. Dr Tom Greeves, chairman of the society since its foundation, summed up the many achievements of the society as 'quality, consistency and integrity,' regarding Dartmoor issues. He singled out the society's pioneering annual debates, through which it had been the first to address many topics not previously discussed in an open public forum — renewable energy, the state of vegetation, military use of the moor, the 40mph speed limit, tourism, the historic importance of 19th and 20th century buildings, the china clay industry, the future of Dartmoor villages, and the concept of national park designation. The Dartmoor Society Award for 2007 was presented to Eileen Webber, of Chagford, for her late husband, Eric Webber, who ran the 110-year- old family business in the town for almost 60 years. The Dartmoor Society Award for 2008 was presented to photographer Chris Chapman. Dr Greeves paid tribute to his work of more than three decades. He said: 'He was a craftsman and also very generous hearted — talents which shone through unrivalled work. The inscription on his plate reads for his outstanding documentary photography of people and places.'
