WE were both delighted and outraged upon reading your front page article (Times, April 1st) about the discovery of white truffles growing in West Devon.
Delighted because, as joint patrons of a newly formed charity, the Society for the Protection Of Our Fungi, we now have another species to add to our list of endangered fungi needing to be preserved.
Outraged because of top chef Peter Gorton's intent to not only to risk destroying this valuable addition to the biodiversity of the area in pursuit of his bourgeois culinary passions, but also his intention to keep the profits to himself.
If Peter does not contact us immediately with information on the whereabouts of these truffles we shall be forced to contact the West Country Intelligent Network Database of Unemployed Pigs to search out the location in order to protect this welcome new arrival to our countryside.
