IT was a red letter day for football in Okehampton on Monday when the town?s club won their first major trophy in more than 50 years. Okehampton Argyle lifted the East Devon Senior Cup after defeating Heavitree at Tiverton. But it was a cliffhanger of a game which had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out after extra time saw the teams level on two goals apiece. The victorious team arrived back in Fore Street to be welcomed by mayor Tony Leech. The players then enjoyed a reception in the Fountain Hotel. Club chairman Alan King said the cup win was a ?tremendous achievement? as Argyle beat the premier league?s second-placed team in the semi-final and the league leaders in the final. The club?s previous major trophy triumph was in 1953 when they won the Football Express Cup.
