TAVISTOCK's former town crier, Bob Rose has died at the age of 75.
Bob died peacefully at Chollacott Nursing Home in Tavistock on February 6.
He became town crier, having won a competition organised by the Lions Club of Tavistock as part of the town's carnival in July 1997.
He became a familiar figure at many events in and around Tavistock during his time as crier, and organised the European Town Crier Championships, held during millennium year, despite undergoing a triple heart by-pass the previous year.
Steve Grummitt, spokesman for the Lions Club of Tavistock, said: 'The club was very sad to hear of Bob's death as we had worked with him for many years after he was selected as the town crier for Tavistock.
'Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Shirley.'
Bob served Tavistock as town crier and mace-bearer for 12 years — in 2003, his services were recognised with an award from West Devon Borough Council.
Tavistock mayor Cllr Anne Johnson said: 'He was an outgoing, enthusiastic and dedicated town crier.
'Bob and his consort and wife Shirley were always keen to help people out, frequently promoting an event in Tavistock.
'They were particularly popular with visiting foreign
students.'
A service in celebration of Bob's life will be held at St Eustachius Church in Tavistock at 2pm on Monday, February 25.
