HAVING carried out their irrational vandalism of historic Bedford Square, our council now seems hell-bent on getting rid of some of the trees which grace the town.

I refer to the development on the corner of Watts Road — opposite the hospital — which has necessitated the removal of a group of mature beech trees — with their associated understorey — in order to build 'luxury homes'.

I was under the impression that most, if not all, town trees were protected by Tree Preservation Orders, not only for aesthetic reasons, but for the vital part they play in cleaning our polluted atmosphere. It would appear that our zealous council has, once again, shown intemperate disregard for the local environment.

TAVISTOCK appears to be taking a delight in destroying many established hardwood trees.

Trees accept the poisonous carbon dioxide and give the life-supporting oxygen. Trees also stabilise the land.

All these attributes help mankind without any expectation of reward.

Pollution is steadily increasing.

Bristol is reputed to be the most polluted city in England. Could Tavistock eventually become the most polluted town?
