A SCHEME which transformed a post office and shops into the new Princetown Stores has been named as a prizewinner at the Dartmoor National Park Authority?s biannual Edward Morshead Awards. The awards which are due to be presented today (Thursday) at Dartmoor NPA headquarters are made in recognition of ?significant contribution to national park purposes? ? the protection, maintenance and enhancement of scenic beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of Dartmoor and the promotion of the understanding and enjoyment of its special qualities. In March 2003, Princetown?s post mistress, greengrocer and newsagent retired. The building housing the businesses was in need of modernisation. The Duchy of Cornwall, which owns the premises, took the opportunity to compress the three businesses into what is now the refurbished Princetown Stores. The design aimed to emulate the appearance of a traditional village store while retaining an empathy with the Princetown Conservation Area and ensuring a viable future for vital village services. The Duchy of Cornwall will be presented jointly with third prize by Mrs Sue Morshead and Bill Cann, Dartmoor NPA chairman. Other winners include Heatree Activity Centre, for the reconstruction of a Bronze Age house for teaching of sustainable living, and the Kelly Mine Preservation Society for sustained restoration and conservation work. The Dartmoor Bracken Stomping Project by the Dartmoor Preservation Association is among those to receive a certificate of high commendation.
