THE plan to reopen the railway is a white elephant. Very few commuters will be able to use it as the proposed timetable to/from Tavistock is a joke!

There is no train suitable for anyone starting work in Plymouth between 7am and 8.45am — unless you like hanging around stations — and no reasonable option at the end of office hours apart from a single train at 5.29pm. Not much use if you leave the office at 4.30pm, or indeed at 5.30, when the next train gets you home after 8pm.

It will not even be possible to get home after an evening theatre visit, as the last train to Tavistock will be at 8.36pm.

It is notable that this line was conspicuously absent from the list of line reopenings proposed by ATOC recently. Why? Without subsidy, it will operate at a loss and will be a burden on taxpayers until such time as, inevitably, it is closed again.
