FILMS could return to Okehampton this summer, using a portable large screen to show the latest movies.

The group formed to look at possibilities for developing a cinema facility for Okehampton following the sale of the Carlton cinema has said it is exploring the possibility of showing films on the portable screen for a couple of evenings a week, most likely on Friday and Saturday nights.

If the idea is supported, the group will aim to buy the equipment and present the films themselves.

The Rev Philip Wagstaff, spokesperson for the cinema group said: ?We would hope to develop links with the college and to use some of the expertise of the students there.

?Longer term we would look to providing a space for films to be shown in Okehampton and to offer a fuller programme of films.?

At the most recent meeting of the group set up to discuss the options following the sale of the Carlton Cinema in St James Street, short and long-term possibilities were explored.

As well as the possible use of a portable screen, Mr Wagstaff said there would also be a meeting with a group from Dorset who could help to set up this project and at the same time explore further ways of making provision of the showing of films in the town.

A further meeting is planned later this month to keep people in touch with developments and to give an opportunity for more people to become involved in this exciting project.

Mr Wagstaff said he would like to thank everyone who had taken time to meet and to discuss ways forward and to everyone in the town and the surrounding villages for their on-going support.

?That support has been brilliant and many people have said that they would back the bringing of films back to Okehampton.

?We hope to be able to do that soon, provided that we can get everything in place in the next few weeks,? he added.
