THE 60th anniversary of D-Day will be commemorated in Okehampton with an afternoon ceremony involving young and old.
The afternoon ceremony will include a parade involving the Royal British Legion, the Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps and other interested organisations, and will take place on Sunday, June 6 in Okehampton town centre.
The parade, starting at 3pm outside St James?s Chapel, will march around Market Street and into Red Lion Yard.
At about 3.30pm there will be an outdoor religious service to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day, followed by the unveiling of a flagstone.
Guests of honour will be veterans of the Normandy campaign and Brigadier R A P Cary, the present Commander of 43 (Wessex) Brigade from Bulford.
Immediately after this ceremony, a tea and dance has been planned for the Charter Hall for members of the Royal British Legion and family members together with other townspeople who would like to join the veterans on this historic occasion.
For planning purposes, the Royal British Legion and Okehampton Town Council would like to have some idea of the numbers of people involved.
Anyone, therefore, wishing to attend the tea/dance is asked to contact the social club of the Royal British Legion, telephone: 01837 53310 or the town council offices on 01837 53179.
