Carlsberg South Western League
Callington Town 2
Truro City 1
CALLINGTON hoisted themselves out of the re-election zone with this hard worked victory.
The match came to life in the seventh minute with the award of the first of two penalties. A Truro attack on the right of the penalty area appeared to be petering out until the linesman signalled a penalty. Justin Andrew stepped up to strike the ball, only for Town's keeper Andy Brenton to make a fine save to his right.
Callington responed to this let off with some good approach work with Duncan Duthie and Mark Keith both going close before, on 23 minutes, they were awarded a penalty. West stepped up but his kick was also saved, this time by Andy Butcher.
With ten minutes of the first half remaining, the deadlock was broken as Callington attacked and the ball fell to West 12 yards out. He fired at an angle to the keeper's right and into the net.
The second half should have started with a third penalty when Shorter appeared to be scythed down in the City area but the officials waved play on. This jolted the visitors into action and they produced a sustained spell of pressure which culminated in an equaliser on 57 minutes. Luke Wort launched a fierce shot past Brenton and into the net.
West set up subsitute Tom Barwell whose shot was saved by Butcher and Barwell was denied by the crossbar on 68 minutes before, with 16 minutes remaining, Callington made the breakthrough.
The creator was West who launched a brilliant crossfield pass to the unmarked Keith on the left. The diminutive striker controlled with his first touch before firing the ball past a helpless Butcher with great aplomb.
The home side were left celebrating victory while a dejected Truro were left rueing missed chances.
l Callington on Saturday travel to meet Torpoint Athletic in the Carlsberg South Western League, 3pm kick-off while 24 hours later they entertain Wadebridge in the first round of the Durning Lawrence Cornwall Charity Cup at Ginsters Marshfield Parc, 2.30pm kick-off.
