MORE than 600 East Cornwall residents have given their views on a proposed one way system and town centre improvement in Callington, taking part in a recent consultation process.

A total of 633 people took part in the consultation, which was the second time residents had been asked to give their views on the project, but this time three options were put forward after the original option received opposition from traders.

The improvements, which include directional traffic flow, a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Tavistock Road and Saltash Road, pavement widening and more on-street car parking spaces, are being funded by Tesco, which opened a store on the outskirts of Callington a year ago, and led by the town council.

The consultation, organised by Callington's Cornwall councillor Andrew Long, started at the beginning of July with a month long event at the Callington Town Council and One Stop Shop offices before Cllr Long took the event to four villages during August.

Cllr Long said: 'I have been incredibly impressed with the level of engagement of the people who have taken the time to fill in the consultation form. These proposals have engaged the people like no other event I can imagine.

'I can reveal that 497 residents took part, along with 52 traders and 84 visitors. Of these respondents, 418 gave Callington as their residence, 79 were from the parish of Calstock, 34 from neighbouring Stoke Climsland and 28 from the parishes of St Dominick and St Mellion.'

Cllr Long will be formulating the report over the next few weeks before presenting it to the next full meeting of Callington Town Council on September 27.

It will also be given to Cornwall Council Highways and will be emailed to the estimated 300 people who indicated they would like to receive the results.
