Tavistock 35

Topsham 0

TAVISTOCK resumed the second half of this season's league campaign in style with an excellent performance from a team that appear to have found their form.

Tavistock opened the scoring with a fine try by winger Mike Liddon, the space created by veteran number 8 Paul Greenhill coming into the line and creating the overlap.

The second was by scrum-half Sean Buttle who scrambled in from close quarters to score a well-worked try profiting from excellent work from the pack.

Tavistock dominated Topsham who looked unorganised considering they lie third in the league. Tavistock continued to dominate — lock Darren Cole broke and crashed over for the third try.

At half-time it appeared Tavistock were set to cruise to victory. However, with the change of end went the advantage of both the slope and the wind.

Topsham tried in vain to score but Tavistock defended well. The final nail in the coffin was a breakaway try from Mike Liddon created from an interception in Tavistock's own 22. Adam Bridgewater kicked the remaining Tavistock points.

Devon 1

Ilfracombe 30

Tavistock 6

TAVISTOCK took the long trip to north Devon to face a side, which is often underestimated. Tavistock with a handful of key players missing from the squad started as if they were playing Sunday rugby.

Ilfracombe opened the scoring with two penalties kicked in close succession, capitalising on a lack of discipline and concentration.

Tavistock came back with two penalties kicked in the first half, and put considerable pressure on the Ilfracombe line in both the first and second halves, with good work from Williams and Greenhill.

Unfortunately, Tavistock did not capitalise on the territory and lacked ideas when it came to finishing. An early injury to centre Barney Dunston and lacklustre defending from Tavistock allowed Ilfracombe to break through and score four tries.

AFTER a three-week lay-off the Seconds were looking for a good win. Bolstered by a few colts, Dave Welsh on the wing and the return of Steve Langdon and Darren Chappel, the side got off to a good start scoring a quick try through Paul Harwood.

But this was nullified by a dismal ten minutes in which Tavistock gifted the opposition a try and a penalty. Conceding the try was the catalyst the side needed to get them going again and shortly afterwards Chappel raced in between the posts for a good try .

Neil Cole also added a try before the break and the seconds turned around with a good lead.

The second half saw the home side enforce their superiority as Chappel crossed for his second try of the game, this time popping up on the wing and Harwood completing a hat-trick. Nick Sweet and John Perkins also managed to get themselves on to the scoresheet as well as treating the Sandy Park crowd to a display of Fijiian-style handling which was well appreciated by the opposition.

Josh Sutton kicked four conversions and the game was marked by a great driving display from the pack with Paul Edwards , Hamish and Dave Dean making surging runs, John Longdon linking well with the backs.

A great performance and one that was important as part of the build up to the cup match in three weeks. It also showed the strength in depth of the club with Stan Staniland, Glen Martin and Andrew Griffiths all unavailable for selection on this occasion.
