A HERD of cattle from Tavistock has been recognised as the most improved herd of South Devons by a prestigious awards scheme.
The Crowndale herd, owned by Nick and Mel Holt-Martyn, was awarded the most improved herd of South Devons award by EBLEX Beef Better Returns Programme.
The award is presented to the recorded herd that shows the greatest genetic gain for commercial traits over a 12-month period. There is a separate award for each of the ten UK breeds.
Dairy consultant Nick Holt-Martyn and his wife Mel bought Crowndale Farm in 2008.
While both work off the farm as well as farming, the objective is to operate the herd efficiently and commercially. They knew they wanted to keep South Devons before buying the farm.
The first 16 pedigree heifers were bought during 2008 from a registered sale in Bristol as well as a dispersal sale. They also purchased a senior high-index bull to provide a solid genetic base to the herd. More recently they bought a young champion polled bull to serve the Demetrius heifers being kept as replacements. There are now 22 pedigree females in the herd.
Mr Holt-Martyn said he was pleased with the progress made, but added there were more improvements to be achieved.
The Holt-Martyns attend local one day shows as they see this as a good way of promoting the herd.
EBLEX breeding specialist Samuel Boon said: 'The Holt-Martyns have made an excellent start to establishing their South Devon herd. Nick is bringing his knowledge and expertise from dairy farming and applying it to the suckler enterprise with great skill.'
