TAVISTOCK Athletic Club members have been all over the region in the last couple of weeks competing in a variety of events.

On Sunday May 2 members were spoilt for choice with two half marathons to choose from and the first Devon League track and field meeting of the season kicking off in Braunton. There was one man who managed to compete in two of the three!

The Devon League meeting at Braunton was a successful event from the club?s point of view. It is a long haul up to north Devon but a good contingent of juniors and seniors made the trip and pulled off a number of notable successes.

Pete Bazley came second in the 5,000 metres: this after completing the Saltash half-marathon earlier in the day then jumping into his car for the journey up to north Devon. He and two other club members took part in the testing 13-miler and pulled off some impressive times. They were:36th, Pete Bazley, 1:41:33; 47th, Fiona Dunn, 1:42:46; 51st, Rob Kirby, 1:43:54.

Up in Exeter the same day was the Great West Run, another popular half which included eight members from Tavistock. New member Andrew Vernon led the club home in a personal best time. Chris Eastaugh also pb?d, coming home closely behind Andrew and in the top 100.

Tavistock results were: 84th, Andrew Vernon, 1:28:37; 97th, Chris Eastaugh,1:29:45; 162nd, Mike Lewis, 1:33:49; 665th, Trevor Williams, 1:50:34; 996th, Nicole Heryet, 1:58:51; 997th, Adrian Bower, 1:58:52; 1420th, Helen Bond, 2:13:15; 1573rd, Keith Bowles, 2:20:41.

Last Saturday was the first of the two days of Devon County track and field championships. Only three made the trip to Braunton but were not disappointed with a decent tally of medals between them.

In the U20 men?s category Adam Holland came eighth in his 1,500 metres in a time of 4m 34.0s. In the 5000 metres he was placed third, completing the race in 17m 15.4s. Also in the 5,000 metres was Richard Drage who was placed first in his M45 age category. In the M50 category, Allan Herdman, preferring the shorter distances, pb?d and won his 100 metres in 13.3s, came second in the 400m in a time of 62.2s and won his long jump with a leap of 4.63m.

It does not stop there, with the Ivybridge 10K coming up this Saturday evening, the second day of the Devon County Championships the week after and the month culminating with the Plymouth half-marathon on May 30.
