TWENTY-EIGHT?former pupils of Tavistock Grammar School, along with ten guests, met for lunch at the town's golf club on Saturday to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the year they joined the school.

Malcolm Smith travelled from Chile and Patrick Tucker from Melbourne, Australia, especially for the reunion. Others travelled from various parts of the UK to be there.

The event was organised by Hilary Charleston (née Shepherd) and Jeanne Loader, who worked diligently to locate the whereabouts of their school friends. They were successful in contacting more than 70, but unfortunately some had already arranged holidays or were not well enough to attend.

Those who attended were Roger Andrews, Elizabeth Mackenzie (née Ball), Jo Phillips (née Bickley) and Mel, Margaret Holt (née Blowey) and John, Keith and Belinda Bryant, Rosemary Hearn (née Cann), David Cooper, Trevor Easterbrook, Roger and Margaret Evans, Des Hancock, Sharon Williams (née Jones), Jeanne Loader, Lorraine Aslett (née Metters) and Bob, David and Jenny Miles, Tony Mills, John Pearce, Jim and Margaret Richards, Hilary Charleston (née Shepherd) and Mervyn, Ted and Ann Sherrell, Malcolm Smith, Richard and Rae Smith, David Stanbury, Joe (Sam) Toland, Pat Tucker and cousin Jan, Roger and Valerie Willey.

Congratulations were expressed to Ted Sherrell on being awarded the honour of first Freeman of Tavistock.

Former pupils who sadly had died were remembered with affection. They included John Owen from Horrabridge, who was one of the organisers of the 2003 reunion, and former town mayor John Warne.
