WEST Devon runners getting in training for the area?s newest half marathon should be in for a great day, following the announcement of new sponsors and raffle prizes.
The second-ever Ruby Run is due to take place on Sunday June 13 ? and this year the route will be reversed, with the athletes running from Holsworthy to Hatherleigh.
The main sponsor this year is Lamisell Beams Ltd, who are based at Sampford Courtenay.
Director Sid Lew said: ?My wife Judith took part in the first Ruby Run last year and the whole day became a full, fun-packed event, made more special by being local.
?The region seemed to come alive that day and I now that several people were inspired to get fit for the next Ruby Run.?
Mr Lew said Lamisell Beams was keen to sponsor local teams and events, like Tavistock/North Tawton ladies? rugby team and Hatherleigh Town Crier Ros Chard?s entry in the European Town Criers? Championships in Belgium.
Other sponsors of the Ruby Run are South West Water and West Devon Meats.
Main prizes for the first male and female runners past the finishing post are Dartington Crystal pieces from their Ruby range, plus Waitrose vouchers.
There are shields for the first two local winners from the Ruby Country area. Somerfield will be supplying water and chocolate for the participants.
Rosie Austin, of the Ruby Country Initiative, said: ?The first runners should start to come in around 11.45ish, and the considered view is that, with the wind behind them and the course being more downhill than up, the first runner should beat last year?s time of 1 hour, 22 minutes.?
Rosie said entries were up on last year and more than 150 runners were expected to take part. Walkers may again enter, starting 30 minutes before the runners.
Ian Brass of Radio Devon will start the race. There will be entertainment and refreshments in the square at Hatherleigh, music will be provided by Holsworthy Town Band and some excellent goods are on offer in the raffle, including a top prize of two return flights to Jersey. Tickets are available at Holsworthy Visitor Centre and on the day.
All profits from the Ruby Run are being donated to CLIC and the two day centres in Holsworthy and Hatherleigh.
Anyone who would like to join the run or find out more about the route should call Carole Smith, race secretary on 01837 811 266 or e-mail [email protected]">[email protected] or download an entry form from http://www.holsworthy.co.uk">www.holsworthy.co.uk
