AS I was walking in Fore Street, Okehampton, on Saturday I was very saddened to see a notice in a shop window, seeking help from a member of the public who had witnessed an assault on the shopkeeper. The window of his shop was broken again.
I was so disheartened to think that the people of Okehampton can once again just stand back and allow people they know to cause such heartache and injustice to members of our community.
Only a few months ago my own daughter was involved in an assault and once again the people who witnessed this incident would not give statements, or their parents would not allow them to.
I have lived in this town for many years and I know that we do suffer from ostrich syndrome, until it happens to our own. But I believe as this town is now expanding and the community becoming much larger, we must stand up and be counted and not allow mindless thugs to rule our lives and make us live in fear.
