AROUND 300 participants pulled on their walking boots to take part in Okehampton's Beating of the Bounds 2010.

Participants, including some on horseback, met on Wednesday, August 18, to set off from Meldon village hall.

Groups made their way, beating 13 stones across eleven miles of moorland during the day, which cost around £2,000 to organise.

Money was donated from Okehampton United Charities, Okehampton Parish Council and the Okehampton Commoners' Association.

Chairman of Okehampton Commoners Philip Heard said it was good to see so many people taking part: 'It was a great day and the weather held off okay, with a few showers.

'It was just nice to show the following generation where the boundary markers were.

'Years ago it was all to do with people who had rights to mark out their area for graves, feeding cattle, taking stones, turf or even fishing.

'Everyone really enjoyed themselves, it's a real social event.'

Participants enjoyed a picnic lunch of pasties and soft drinks at New Bridge before heading back home.
