Play-off for league

winner's cup

Torpoint 2

Tamar Valley Thistles 2

WITH Thistles having played in the cup final legs were starting to tire although the lads showed a fine display of football.

Thistles had the better first half. Lee Wickett took a free kick and it found Darren Sambells who slotted it in only for the ref to blow for a penalty — unfortunately it was saved.

Better attacks came, one of which was a pass for Wickett to run down the middle and whack in Thistles' first.

Thistles were lifted and attacks came with Paul Hoskin hitting the crossbar.

Another started with Adam Cooke in defence putting a through-ball to Sambells.

Cooke received the back-pass and hit a superb kick over the Torpoint defence to score his first of the season.

In the second half Tim Lowe and Graham Sargent went just wide of goal or over the bar.

Suddenly Torpoint got through the defence of Adam Cooke, Simon Callender, Phil Peers and Peter Richardson, who until then had cleared any balls.

Torpoint took on keeper Shaun Maloney and scored their first.

With only 10 minutes to play Torpoint were awarded a corner and placed the ball in the net.

Extra time was played only to end in a draw and another play-off.

Second round play-off

Tamar Valley Thistles 1

Torpoint 3

TORPOINT got onto the scoresheet first, but Thistles did not sit back. Paul Hoskin sent through-balls to Lee Wickett but was was closed down.

Torpoint found another gap and were through on goal to claim their second.

Thistles were looking tired; Torpoint, not playing for five weeks, were well rested while Thistles had played evening and cup games.

Tim Lowe took a free kick outside the area and placed it beautifully in the back of the net. This lifted Thistles' hopes. Wingers Graham Sargent and Darren Sambells got quality balls in the box but play was against them.

The defence of Adam Cooke, Phil Peers, Pete Richardson and Simon Callender worked their socks off and should be proud of their season.

Torpoint grabbed another goal to seal their victory. Thistles' keeper Shaun Maloney came off due to an injury.

Russell Rice sent good passes through to Wickett but still Torpoint kept them out, more through luck. Matt Gent and Jack Payne played well together with Payne unlucky not to score.

Thistles gain promotion as runners-up. Manager Keith Hoskin and coach Mark Wickett thanked their sponsor, Tavistock Carpets and the players for their team performance and attitude to the game.
