THE Museum of Dartmoor Life (MDL) celebrates its 30th birthday this year, and is marking the event with an open day on Saturday August 20.
The museum opened in July 1981, with the museum building also celebrating its 200th birthday this year following its construction in 1811.
The museum came into existence thanks to a decision by a group of volunteers to raise funds to buy the buildings. The group then restored and refurbished the building so it could house the growing collection of local objects.
Now a fully accredited independent charitable trust, the MDL has an emphasis on the social history of Dartmoor and Okehampton, from pre-history to the present.
Highlights include a pair of 14th century engraved bells, which have links to Okehampton Castle, and the bull-nose Morris pick-up vehicle from 1922. The museum also has a gallery which can be hired out, and its own research space.
The March 2011 edition of the Museums Journal, the leading source for information on museums and galleries, chose the MDL as a specialist collection well worth visiting.
In a recent visit, MP for Central Devon Mel Stride said: 'I was thrilled to see such an interesting museum showcasing such a huge amount of history on Dartmoor.
'I would urge people to visit this outstanding museum this summer, but also, if they live locally, to consider volunteering to help out and preserve this fine facility for Okehampton.'
The museum is celebrating the anniversary with live music from a group of local young musicians, nibbles and some bubbly for visitors. Raffle tickets will be available, and donations to the museum will be welcomed.
The Dartmoor Rescue Group, the Dartmoor Magazine and the Okehampton Community Archive will be present on the day to talk to, and the museum's research area will be open to explore and experience first hand on the day.
Volunteers at the museum will also be available to talk to about the potential volunteering opportunities at the MDL and how to become a 'Friend of the Museum'.
The museum open day takes place between 11am and 3pm. Everybody is welcome to a friendly day for the whole community to enjoy.
