RESIDENTS of Okehampton can have all the excitement of a day at the races without having to venture very far on August 4 because a 'Fun Race Night' is planned at the Conservative Club as part of the Queen Mother's birthday celebrations.
The Queen Mother is known for her interest in racing and the event, starting at 8pm, is just one of the activities going on throughout the day.
The event, in aid of Okehampton Football Club, will consist of a board game with dice and five races of six horses. To sponsor a horse is £5 and stakes are 50p.
Bottles of whisky will go to the sponsors of winning horses and runners-up will receive bottles of wine. There will also be light refreshments and a draw.
President of the Conservative Club Jill Wilson is also a voluntary cook at Okehampton Football Club and chose the latter to be her charity this year.
Mrs Wilson is urging footballers, Conservative club members and non-members to come along for an evening of fun and raise money for the youth and senior football teams of the town. The fun starts at 8pm.
