I AM annoyed and dismayed at the recent actions of Cllr Oxborough and Morrisions Supermarket. In coming together to request a judicial review of the recent and democratic decision to approve a planning application for the former Focus DIY site on Plymouth Road, they have put their own interests before those of the town. I fully understand why Morrisons don't want to see Tesco in Tavistock — it will greatly reduce their profit. But Cllr Oxborough should know better. I listened carefully to the radio interview he gave when he lodged the request for a judicial review and was disappointed to hear that he thought the council could use their financial reserves to pay for the costly exercise. This is made me feel sick. How dare he! I would like the council to stop paying his £10,000 salary immediately and put it towards the costs of defending the claim. I would like to publically ask Cllr Oxborough whether he will personally foot the legal bill for this claim, or whether Morrisons will be paying it for him. If he is capable of funding the judicial review himself, then why involve Morrisions at all? Surely this is a conflict of interest that warrants his immediate suspension. I would also like to know whether Cllr Oxborough will be creating more than 100 local jobs, to compensate for those that Tesco promised. Cllr Oxborough is claiming he was prevented from speaking at the planning meeting and that he had information that would have changed the outcome of the democratic process. I wonder why Cllr Oxborough did not use his skills of leadership and personal judgement to ensure that this information was brought to the planning meeting or to persuade the meeting chair to let him speak. After all, he had this information for several weeks before the meeting — not days as he misleadingly said in his media interview. People shop in supermarkets, it's a fact – if it weren't true then Morrisons would not be complaining about Tesco wanting to come to our town. But people shop in local independent stores too. My family, like many others, does a weekly shop in one of the many different supermarkets in the area; but we also visit the butchers, the pet emporium, the veg shop and very many of the other stores in Tavistock every single week. I do not believe that Cllr Oxborough is on the right side of public opinion on this matter. I hope the people of Tavistock pick up their pens and write to the council to complain about Cllr Oxborough and his shocking actions. Emma Taynton-Young Chillaton
