I confess to having been both surprised and dismayed by Mr Marshal's comments in your article (December 7) on the school crossing at Whitchurch.
Whilst I have an interest in this matter (my wife being the crossing patrol) I have on many occasions whilst accompanying her observed vehicles which are obviously travelling in excess of 20 mph. I have also heard many parents with small children express their grave concerns on the same subject.
Sending police or traffic wardens along serves little purpose as drivers slow down when they see their uniform or vehicle. This situation only lasts as long as they are present.
The comments that physical traffic calming methods cannot be used mystifies me, especially as they have been used approximately two miles along the same road in the middle of the countryside and on the road leading to the council offices.
It would appear that, unfortunately, the council highways department is prepared to adopt a re-active rather than pro-active stance on this matter. I for one sincerely hope they are never forced to do so.
