A TAVISTOCK man has recreated a little piece of Lanzerote in his front garden ? and all it took was one hour and a can of spray paint! When ex-paratrooper Barry Crook found he could not buy black gravel, as seen across the volcanic isle of the Canary Islands, he decided a bit of DIY was in order. His blue/grey gravel has now taken on a new shade of black and Barry and he and his partner Rose Richards are delighted: ?Once we have got a few terracotta pots on it and some flowers we should have the right effect,? said Barry, who lives at Crelake. ?Rose was saying how nice the gardens were in Lanzerote when we came back. I had grass in the front garden but it never grew properly because of a lack of light,? he said. ?I bought some standard gravel and some spray paint. It took about an hour to transform it.? Barry said the gravel could not be heavily walked on or moved around but for the purpose it was serving, the spray paint had done the trick. ?It is just an area to look at and if we get fed up with it I could rake it over and start again,? he said. When the rain falls Barry says the gravel looks even better because it goes much darker: ?Gravel seems to come in all sorts of colours but black,? he said. ?The only thing I could find was a black marble they use in graveyards but it is £100 a bag. ?I got three cans of spray paint for £30 and I have still got two cans left. As for starting a trend Barry, who is a maintenance caretaker at Tavistock College, said the sky?s the limit with some gravel and a can of spray paint: ?You could paint a flag or a white horse ? there is all sorts you could do,? he said. ?I thought I would try it as an idea and we are really pleased.?
