YOUR presentation of the issues surrounding the borough executive mayor referendum (Times, January 10) was excellent, but I would like to raise one issue which you gave little space to.

A 'Yes' vote in the referendum could lead to an election process stretching from the beginning of February to May.

Maintaining a healthy democracy with maximum public participation is of vital importance to our country, but is this the best way to achieve it?

One more election at the borough taxpayers' expense (about £35,000?) and more canvassing.

In 2001 the public were exposed to high-profile election campaigns from we politicians. There will be borough and town council elections in 2003.

Do the public really want three months of electioneering in 2002?
