A VIGIL for peace is to be held in Okehampton town centre the day that war starts in Iraq.
Okehampton Peace Coalition is inviting everyone where possible to leave their workplace or home and gather at noon, on that day outside St James? Chapel, Fore Street, as a presence for peace.
Ana Pulteney, spokesperson for the Okehampton Peace Coalition, said the vigil was taking place alongside similar gatherings in other communities ? both locally and nationally. This was part of the Stop the War Coalition?s action across the country.
?The coalition is committed to opposing any racist backlash generated by the war, and to prevent the erosion of civil rights,? she said.
?There is to be another demonstration in London on the first Saturday after war breaks out.?
