THE festive season officially swung into action last Friday, as the president of Tavistock Lions Club switched on the club?s three ?Trees of Light? in Bedford Square. It is the sixth year the club has mounted Christmas trees in the square, where the lights are sponsored by local people in memory of loved ones ? to date, more than £11,000 has been raised for Macmillan Nurses. Lions member Roger Lethbridge said the tradition had become so popular that two extra trees were now erected on the wall of the town hall. He said the club was extremely grateful to Tavistock Woodland Sawmill for supplying the main tree, the town council and staff for erecting the trees and the Times for publishing the sponsorship forms. Roger said the Lions were also delighted that Morris Brothers of Tavistock had become the main sponsors of the Trees of Light, covering all the costs, including the two extra trees and the printing and postage of remembrance cards for each light sponsor. As a result of this generous gesture, the club hopes to support Children?s Hospice South West, in addition to the usual donation to Macmillan Nurses. l Tomorrow night (Friday) will see the Tavistock packed with hundreds of Christmas shoppers as the town holds the annual Dickensian Evening, organised by the chamber of commerce. All West Devon Borough Council-owned car parks in Tavistock will be free to shoppers from 4pm.
