OKEHAMPTON'S big street clean-up was going swimmingly until technical problems stopped Okehampton Chamber of Trade members in their tracks — but they will be back this weekend!

Cleaning the shop fronts and a general sprucing-up by the chamber is part of a collaboration with Okehampton Town Council to keep Okehampton tidy after its major enhancement.

Chairman of the chamber Ian Bailey said some of the shop fronts had become dirty because of the winter weather and as well as a good wash down, weeds growing on walls were being pulled out.

'We have had this wonderful enhancement scheme so we want to keep standards high in Okehampton.'

The clean-up will stretch from West Street to East Street and the chamber is also asking individual shopowners to take a pride in their premises.

'We all work long hours and sometimes we cannot see the wood for the trees,' he said.

'I am just asking people when they have got a few minutes to stand back and take a look from a customer's point of view.'
