A SURVEY has been carried out commissioned by CSV (Community Service Volunteers) to promote its 'Make a Difference Day' on Saturday, October 31, which aims to promote volunteering in the community.
The survey of 2,000 people revealed more than half feel happier when they help a neighbour or friend with a problem.
Tavistock Area Support Service relies on volunteers to make a difference to local people and has welcomed this report, as it has said it is in need of volunteers, especially drivers, to help with the wide range of transport requests.
Andy Lyle, TASS's general manager, said: 'This year has seen an increase in those needing to access health appointments due to the Hospital Car Service now being run in our area by TASS and the need for volunteers to help with this.
'We have also seen an increase in the use of our wheelchair accessible mini buses and our trips have been varied including weekends away and a day trip to The Isles of Scilly.
'Volunteers are essential to our work and I can think of no better way of helping someone than volunteering for a local charity that makes a difference to local people.'
One driver said: 'Volunteering since taking early retirement has given me something to occupy my time, each week I volunteer for a couple of hours and it is a pleasure to see how a trip out makes a difference to people's lives.
'Volunteering has also meant I have visited new places and made new friends, you don't just make a difference to others but they also make a difference to you.'
