THE bells of Chagford's ancient St Michael's Church are ringing once more — thanks to a magnificent community fundraising drive this year.

The bells fell silent ten months ago, when serious wet rot was discovered in the oak beams supporting the bell frame.

'It was considered too dangerous for the bells to be rung,' said Julia Endacott, captain of Chagford's team of bellringers.

A tower appeal was launched to raise the £55,000 needed to replace the beams with more durable steel ones.

And just ten months later, the bells are ringing out again, for the first time appropriately on Advent Sunday.

'It's brilliant — we're absolutely delighted,' said Mrs Endacott.

She said a variety of fundraising events and generous donations meant the target was reached in record time.

Main events included a Brownies and Guides sponsored sing, a bellringers' concert and sponsored abseil down the church tower, a darts evening, art evening, barn dance, sponsored walk and the proceeds of Chagford Pantomime were also donated.

Mrs Endacott said: 'A sincere thank you to everyone in Chagford and beyond for making it possible to ring the bells again so soon, and for ensuring the appropriate restoration of the fabric of our historic church.'

She hoped the restoration would mean problem-free bellringing for the 15-strong team at the 12th century church for many years to come.

'The trouble is, granite is very porous — hopefully now we have steel beams it shouldn't be such a problem,' said Mrs Endacott.
