YELVERTON Tennis Club received two merit awards at the recent presentation evening held by Plymouth and District Tennis League at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel in Plymouth.
Helen Smith and Karen Gasche won the award for the top pair in division two, while ladies' captain Ann Short with partner Wendy Sharland, Jenny Kay and Liz Parks won for their efforts in achieving runners up in division four. They were pipped at the post in the last league match by a strong St Budeaux D team, but both teams are promoted to division three next season.
Yelverton run four teams, one mens and three ladies and a team supper was held last week at the Whitchurch Inn.
Chairman Mary Downey thanked all the players for their contribution to a successful season and made a presentation to the two captains, Phil Gasche and Ann Short.
The most promising new player was Lynn McFarlane, who came fourth in the total averages of points for division five and Ann Short presented her with a plate to mark this achievement. Ann also thanked the 20 ladies in her squad and coach Roger Froud for his valuable help.
The Mixed Doubles autumn tournament finals were played in lovely weather last month. The first semi final between Ann Short and John Marshall against Fiona Spreadbury and James Hills, was a thrilling three set match - with Fiona and James winning the deciding set 7-5 after being 2-4 down.
The other semi also went to the final set with Wendy Sharland and Chris Taylor narrowly winning over Phil and Emily Gasche.
The final was another close match and although Fiona and James played competitively, it was won by Wendy and Chris who played consistently over two sets to win the tournament 6-1, 6-4.
