aTAVISTOCK Tennis Club held its annual tournament finals last Saturday when fine weather allowed all events to be completed.
The standard of play was high with close and keenly contested matches - some of the best in recent years.
There were outstanding performances by Sara Whyman, still a junior, and for the second year running, winning both junior girls and ladies' titles, Bill Sparks and Phil Harbottle both winning two titles.
Results: Juniors under 13 and 15 years played two weeks before. U13 boys; Josh Evans winner. U13 girls; Elizabeth Beckett v Ella Evans 4-0 best of 7 games.
U15 boys Ashley Rice v Jamie Osborne 6-1 (one set). U15 girls; Anna Maunder v Ros Davies 6-2.
In the morning there was the traditional competition where parents play with their children in doubles with a good entry of 12 pairs, followed by the older junior events and seniors in the afternoon. Children/parents final: Phil Snell/Jenny Snell (auntie, exception made) v Tom/Josh Cook 4-3 best of seven games.
Boys U18 Will Simpson v Tom Bruce; 6-1, 6-2. Girls U18 Sara Whyman v Joanne Salmon 6-0, 6-1 which was closer than the score depicts.
U18 doubles; Will Sparks/Russell Rice v Sara Whyman/James Martin 6-4, 6-1.
The junior player of the year award went to Sara Whyman, boys' captain cup Tom Bruce, girls' captain cup Sara Whyman and the most improved player of the year award shared between Will Simpson and James Martin.
Mens singles: Phil Harbottle beat Alan Bruce 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 after being 0-2 games in the third. This is the second time that Phil has won the title.
Ladies singles: Sara Whyman beat Annie Jefferies 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in a long and exhausting match where there was a contrast in styles, Sara baselining and Annie volleying.
Ladies' doubles; Kylie Martin/Alison Clish-Green beat Babette Jackson/Sue Parsons 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the longest match of the day. Men's doubles: Phil Harbottle/Will Sparks beat Rick Read/Sean Jefferson 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a match which hinged round some crucial points in the second set where there was some exceptional play.
Mixed doubles (veterans): Sue Whiteman/Bill Sparks beat Babette Jackson/Tim Wallis 6-3, 6-3. The open age group mixed doubles tournament is to be played later in the year to maintain competitive play.
Club president Norma Woodcock presented the trophies and the day was rounded off with a barbecue in the evening.
