A TAVISTOCK charity is to make the most of this year's budgetary tax changes in an effort to make their annual fundraising campaign the best ever.
Tavistock and District Christian Aid Group makes a house-to-house collection each year — last year it raised £3,000, but hopes to collect substantially more this time.
Ian Silcox, chairman and treasururer, said: 'In this year's budget the minimum amount for Gift Aid has been removed.
'If you are a tax payer and you kindly let us know your name and address on the specially provided envelopes, Christian Aid can reclaim your tax at 28 pence in the pound to add to your donation.'
The envelopes will be delivered to and collected from most homes in the area during Christian Aid week, from May 16 to 20.
'Nobody enjoys paying tax, but this is a once in a millennium opportunity to enable more of the tax we pay to benefit those in greatest need,' said Mr Silcox.
Anyone who does not receive an envelope can pick one up from the Tavistock Parish Centre in Plymouth Road and the Methodist Church Office in Chapel Street during the week or at local churches on May 21.
Christian Aid week will begin with a united service at St Andrew's Church in Whitchurch at 6.30pm on May 14.
