RESIDENTS of Tavistock are being given a unique opportunity to take part in a world record attempt while raising much needed funds for Cancer Research UK during a major fundraising event.
Tavistock College’s sports centre is hosting a brand new event called Sprintathon on Saturday, March 18.
The idea is for people to sign up, alone or as part of a group with friends, family or colleagues to sprint 100 metres. Collectively, a marathon will be sprinted — which means 422 legs of 100 metres. Runners can sign up to do 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres or 800 metres.
The event is not just for elite runners and anyone aged 12 and above is welcome to take part.
The event has been organised by Liz May, the founder of Pink Pong, a volunteer fundraising group which raises money for Cancer Research UK through the power of sport.
Liz was named Devon Sports Awards Volunteer of the Year in 2015.
She said: ‘Whether you consider yourself to be a sprinter or just an average runner, this is a chance to be a part of something new and different. It’s going to be a great afternoon out.
‘We would love to see some fancy dress as well as standard running gear!
‘I have been raising money for Cancer Research UK for over six years but never before have Pink Pong been involved in organising an event on this scale in Devon so I am really excited.
‘I, like most people, have had friends and family who have been affected by cancer and raising money is one way we can fight back.’
Annabel Coakley, local fundraising manager for Cancer Research UK, said: ‘We are so happy that Liz is fronting this unique event. She is an amazing fundraiser and has twice received a special commendation in the Flame of Hope Awards, which are the highest accolades that Cancer Research UK can bestow on our amazing volunteers.
‘We are hoping that everyone with an interest in running can get behind this event and help Devon beat the world record which is currently held by a fundraising team in Marlow.
‘It currently stands at 1:46:26 – this, and their fundraising total of £21,530, is definitely beatable!’
