South West Division one

Truro B 1

TAVISTOCK dominated the first half only for Truro to take charge in the second. This was an important match for Tavistock if they were to retain their status in the league.

Tavistock fielded a younger team than previous weeks and the bright industry of Neal and Jolley was clear to see. Slick passing created early chances for Doney upfront with the 'keeper making several good saves. They took the lead when Richards, who came on to the right, surged down the wing, received the ball and taking one touch to control lashed the ball in at the far post. This was a fine first goal for Richards.

Once the second half got underway so Truro came out more resurgent. They were unlucky not to equalise earlier when a fine shot crashed off the upright, leaving Tavistock to think this may be their day after all. Truro's equaliser was a timid affair, with the shot creeping over the goal line, taking the defence by surprise. While this was a fair result it was hard luck on the Tavistock defence as Bellard had played through the pain barrier and Costello had an outstanding game.

Tavistock now have one last game to go and need to match whatever result Penzance A achieve to retain their place in this league.

Truro Ladies 6

Okehampton Columbines Ladies 4

BUOYED up by recent victories Okehampton, despite injuries, went in all guns blazing and severely rattled Truro. The first ten minutes were dominated by Okehampton's attack and Truro could not get into their stride. The intensity paid off when Jane Jones, playing an excellent game as ever, struck at goal from a short corner and put Okehampton in the lead.

Truro were galvanised into action and equalised within minutes. As the first half continued they made better use of their swift and accurate passing to score twice again and make it 3-1 to the home team.

Oke were not daunted and never let up but soon were another goal down. Their spirit was epitomised with Rachel Hammett making a fantastic sprint as right wing to pick the ball off the back-line for a good cross. Unfortunately Okehampton could not quite pick it up but soon a brilliant solo run by Jo Moppet got Okehampton their second goal taking the score to 4-2.

Again Truro came back with their clinically excellent ferocity. Despite sterling midfield work, where Viv Weatherington and Carol Taylor particularly excelled, Truro took the score to 6-2. Now Oke's stamina and determination showed through and the luck, which had been against them, turned. Alex Collins, who had played well throughout, scored two goals in quick succession. Okehampton's blood was up and Truro was on the back foot but, alas, time ran out for the Columbines.

Okehampton play at home next week on Saturday against Caradon Seconds at 2.30pm and again on Sunday against Plymouth University at 11am, also at home.

Exeter University ladies' fifths 1

Okehampton Ladies seconds 1

IN Okehampton's penultimate game of the season it was the home side who moved the ball around the pitch with fast accurate passes; however, the Oke girls worked hard, intercepting the ball and soon were on the attack.

There were many goal scoring chances for Oke throughout the match but luck wasn't on their side. Kim Davey weaved around the University defence only to be thwarted by their dominant keeper. Oke wings Hannah Whiteley and Sophie Cunnington were both upended by the home keeper in their efforts to score.

The second half saw both teams determined to score. Oke's left half Rachel Laidlaw channelled her opposing wing skillfully away from the Oke circle and combined well with left back Katie Graves to clear the ball from defence.

Oke were caught off their guard when the University ladies suddenly attacked moving the ball quickly across the circle and neatly slotting a goal past the Oke keeper.

Okehampton responded by upping their game and solid tackling from Brieze Reed gained Oke good ball possession. Right half Nat Dennis looked dangerous on the attack, passing some penetrating balls into the University's circle. Oke's efforts were rewarded when they were awarded a penalty corner which Amanda Sim made no mistake in converting into an equalising goal. Oke's attack was now relentless and Eve Colton very nearly got the winning goal just putting the ball wide of the goal.

Oke's player of the match was awarded to Sophie Whiteley, who was both strong in defence and dangerous in attack.

Callington Ladies 0

Tavistock Ladies seconds 7

CALLINGTON Ladies made Tavistock battle for the points. From the first whistle Tavistock applied the pressure on the Callington defence, and only some last-gasp defending managed to clear the ball from the danger zone, and keep the scores level.

Tavistock were bossing the match from mid-field with Martin dominant. They also looked dangerous down the flank, where Huntington-Whitely and Gawman linked well.

It was on the quarter hour, when Tavistock opened the account, with Smallacombe hitting one past the Callington keeper. Tavistock quickly slotted home two more goals, from Mcclumpha and Smallacombe.

Having gone 3-0 up Tavistock were not going to take their foot off the opposition throat, and continued to move the ball around, Pollock playing high on the pitch, feeding the ball well to the flanks, where Sarah Mcclumpha and Mills-Hicks made the opposition work hard in an attempt to keep up with the pace of Tavistock's play. Three more goals, from stand-in skipper Firth, Gawman and Smallacombe rounded out the first half.

After the break Tavistock continuing to apply pressure. Callington managed to mount a couple of attacks, these were easily handled by Horton, Court and Evans. Keeper Greensted got involved in the most dangerous of the Callington attacks, clearing the ball on the second attempt.

Tavistock continued to pressurise the Callington goal, but were just missing the final finishing touch.

When Tavistock switched their attacks down to the right hand wing it brought immediate results as McClumpha crossed to Firth who hit strongly past the Callington keeper, extending the lead to seven.
