ISCA C 1
Tavistock 0
TAVISTOCK men's hockey team have finally finished their season with the promotion play-off match against the C team of Exeter-based club ISCA.
This was a tough task for Tavistock as ISCA had home advantage and had just seen their first XI win Premier I, making them the strongest club west of Swindon.
ISCA took the lead after 15 minutes from a well rehearsed short-corner routine and would have increased it by half-time but for excellent defence by Lethbridge and Costello.
Tavistock re-arranged their midfield after the break and gained a greater control of the game.
Led by man of the match Phil Edwards, they attacked at every opportunity but failed to find the final touch to level the match.
At one point Tavistock had three players against the ISCA keeper, but still failed to score, leaving the Exeter side to celebrate a 1-0 win at the final whistle.
This game saw a disappointing end to Tavistock's most successful season ever, where their record of 13 wins and only two defeats from 18 games, scoring 69 goals in the process, would have brought them automatic promotion from South West I to South II, but for the performance of the unbeaten Truro 1st XI.
With the men's 2nd XI earning promotion to South West II and an encouraging number of younger players regularly attending club training evenings, Tavistock are already looking forward to next season.
The club are looking to arrange more matches for their (mixed) junior side, increase the strength of the ladies first and second XIs and form a third men's XI in 2002.
Anyone interested in joining the club, or just attending training from September, please contact the secretary, Phil Honey (tel: 610032) or Bob Cowen (613674).
l Club members are reminded that the annual meeting is at 7pm on Thursday May 3 in the Ordulph Arms function room.
