TAVISTOCK residents Laura and Mark Hennessey returned from the Speedo British Grand Prix, held at the Penlan Pool in Swansea, inspired by a tremendous piece of British swimming history.
After seeing Newcastle's Sue Rolph become the first British female to break the 60-second barrier for the 100m butterfly, the two Plymouth Leander swimmers helped the club to return with four A positions, 12 final spots and placings in age group finals.
Mark, a year 8 student at Tavistock College, claimed top honours in the age group finals, taking a gold medal in the 11/12 years breaststroke (1:16.85) and a silver in the 200m (2:32.10). He completed his weekend with finalist positions in the 100m freestyle backstroke and butterfly events.
At only 12 years of age and the youngest entrant in the senior grand prix events, Mark showed no sign of nerves as he qualified for the National Age Group championships next year by over five seconds in the 200m breaststroke (2:44.40).
A massive PB 34.44 in the 50m breaststroke rounded off a productive weekend for the current national age group champion.
Sister Laura, 15, also had a fulfilling weekend. Competing in a number of events she swam strongly to make her debut appearance in a senior Grand Prix Final. Competing in the B final of 100m breaststroke, Laura gained valuable experience against fierce opposition.
Both Laura and Mark will form part of the Plymouth Leander squad who will compete in the Speedo League Premier Division Final on December 4 against Hillfield, Bridgend County, Torfaen Borough, Ferndown Otters, City of Cardiff, City of Swansea and Exeter City.
