Cornwall and Devon League Truro 10 Tavistock 26 TAVISTOCK avenged a defeat earlier in the season by Truro with this emphatic win away on Saturday. This win was accomplished with a good all round team performance with no one players' contribution standing out, although a special mention should be made of Duncan Law who scored a hat trick of tries. Victory in this game away at fourth placed Truro keeps Tavistock in second place in the Cornwall and Devon league two points behind leaders Newquay, who they entertain at the end of January. Tavistock started well taking the game to their hosts and some superb driving forward play saw them gain a position deep in the Truro 22. The forwards tried a couple of driving mauls before at the third occasion they drove from a lineout and flanker Duncan Law secured the try, which fly half Josh Sutton converted. Tavistock extended their lead after 20 minutes when after Truro were penalised the quick thinking Duncan Law took a quick penalty and wrong footed the whole defence to score under the posts, Sutton again converted. Truro then came back at Tavistock and forced them to concede a number of penalties for infringements around the breakdown. After penalising Tavistock a number of times Tavistock lost Paul Greenhill to the sin bin when he was judged to have illegally slowed down Truro ball. Whilst Tavistock were down to 14 men Truro got onto the scoreboard with a try from Ian Williamson, converted by John Martin. Back at full strength Tavistock extended their lead with a third try from Duncan Law, again converted by Sutton. The last action of the first half saw Tavistock penalised on half way and John Martin kicked a penalty goal for Truro making the half time score 21-10 to Tavistock. After all the action of the first half the second half was much more a war of attrition with both sides probing for openings. The Tavistock defence stood firm with scrum half Mike Deebner together with the back row of Matt Cole, Greenhill and Law bossing the fringes and the centre pairing of Lawrence Evans and Doug Lloyd ensuring nothing went through midfield. The final score of the game came deep into injury time. After Truro were penalised Josh Sutton pushed his forwards deep into the corner and from a well won lineout Tavy skipper Jake Phillips went around the blind side to grab a try. l This weekend sees Tavistock with a free date and they resume Cornwall and Devon league action on January 16 when they travel to Bideford.
