WITH respect, the Rev P Kyle (Letters May 23) intimated allowing Tavistock Market to open Sundays, is incorrect. Bible quote, Mark 2:27, 'The Sabbath came into existence for the sake of man'.
Opening a market doesn't stop one going to church. We're taught, God gave us a free will. In any event, not everyone is Christian, but everybody thinks their belief is the right one.
The oldest religion is Jewish, their Sabbath day is Saturday, Christian is Sunday, Islam's is Friday. With so many other religions, eg Hindu Buddhism etc, if we recognised each with a day off, there wouldn't be enough days in the week.
If only the Reverend could tell us something more helpful, eg why in 98% of deaths, does each have to become ill first, then suffer pain before they can die? One cannot demand the cessation of life, with all its pain and suffering, except for a dog.
Let's hear of something more helpful than opening Sundays, and while he's about it try explaining why animals have to cruelly eat each other, and humans often have to suffer months and years, when many simply wish to die.
I feel sure the Reverend gentleman could make a better and far more interesting sermon of the latter, rather than the market.
Incidentally, I am Christian, but I don't tell others what they should do, after all, they may be much better than me.
With respect, please answer my little challenge, then we may learn something of interest to all readers, irrespective of which religion.

WE, too, are against the opening of the Tavistock Pannier Market on Sundays.
As the Rev Philip Kyle stated clearly in his letter (May 23), we cannot expect God's blessing upon us if we do not keep His commandents.
There will be an impact on family life and some people will find themelves pressurised to work on Sundays when they would prefer not to.
We would appeal to Tavistock Town Council to rethink their decision of granting Sunday trading to the market.
