A RIDING and training double for Richard Woollacott was the feature of the Lamerton meeting on a warm, sunny day at Kilworthy before a huge crowd, writes Granville Taylor.

The 2010 champion jockey took the Mixed Open when Deb's Dasher just got the better of Massimo.

'He has been big and backward and we have taken him gently,' said Richard of this fast improving gelding.

The Rose Ash stable was also in the winner's enclosure thanks to Jopero who was given a short head verdict over Brook Castle in a driving finish to the Confined.

Josh Guerriero was narrowly thwarted on Brook Castle, but steered home Mike Weir's Barney Again to win his division of the Open Maiden. The flat bred winner stripped fit from, 'about 30 days hunting with the Dartmoor,' where his owner/trainer acts as master. The other Maiden division went to the Cotley qualified Rush N' Roll who stayed on strongly under Michael Legg to beat his 14 opponents.

Gorteenwood was a shock 20-1 winner of the Restricted, making virtually all under a shrewd ride from Micheal Nolan. The Irish jockey, based with Philip Hobbs, is riding at the top of his form. Gordon Chambers trains Gorteenwood at Buckfastleigh on behalf of a group formed around the local pub, the Sun Inn.

Lifton based Dean Summersby rode his Bathwick Breeze to win a competitive Hunt race.

'My partner Emma Boon has done a lot of the work with the horse, who was originally acquired from the David Pipe yard,' said Dean.

Michael Heard partnered runner-up Theicecreamfellow in the Hunt race and also had to settle for second place in the Intermediate on family horse Googoobarabajagal, who was just outstayed by the improving Kirkleigh. Tom Chanin had the mount on Kirkleigh, trained by his father Robert on behalf of owner Sue Trump.
