WE booked a lunch at the Tavi Friar for a 99-year-old's birthday meal as she has always loved trips to Tavistock and fish and chips. On arrival we were shocked to see a fire engine outside the building and were horrified to find the Friar was shut. However, it transpired the proprietor of the Friar, in the midst of his problems, had thought to book us into an establishment across the road and moreover would pay the bill to avoid our 99 year old being disappointed on her birthday. I thought such customer service and generosity should be acknowledged by a letter to your paper. Lewis Downing Frensham Avenue Plymouth
