NOVEMBER saw the completion of a successful year as golf captain of Hurdwick Golf Club for Kevin Pugh and for Elizabeth Raikes, as ladies? captain.

The new golf captain is Rodney Browne, to whom captaincy is no new thing. Rodney retired from the Royal Navy in 1996, with the rank of captain, having specialised in hydrographic surveying.

He took up golf seriously some four years ago and has quickly built up a reputation for forecasting weather conditions for all of the Hurdwick events.

The ladies? captain is Brenda Truscott, who has been a Hurdwick member for many years.

Brenda is a keen sportswoman who, other than her golfing activities, is well known locally for her involvement in hockey, netball and athletics.

Recent competitions have been held in stormy conditions.

The monthly stableford was won by Rob Holter with 36 points and Tim Gale took second position from Tony Pearson on back 9, both scoring 35 points.

The ladies section was won by Sue Wilson with 30 points and, yet again, second position was decided on back 9 with Elizabeth Raikes pushing Sally Arscott back into third place.

The ?two?s? sweep was shared by Tim Gale and Graham Raikes.

The medal competition was played in equally difficult conditions and Tim Hawkins produced the best result of the day to take division one with a net 70, Rob Holter was second with 71 and Kevin Pugh in third place with 72.

Division two leader was Ray Spear with a net 71, Ray Hurle in second with 73 and George Whitfield in third spot with 76.

The only two of the day came from Rob Holter who scooped the ?two?s ? sweep.
